Bio: I am a former Navy Engineering Laboratory Technician who served on the submarine USS Nevada (SSBN 733) from 2009-2014. I am currently a student in environmental science at the Huxley College on the Peninsulas through Western Washington University.  This is my first cruise with NOAA and my first oceangoing cruise on a surface ship.  I hope to take this experience to get some firsthand experience seeing the conditions in the Indian Ocean as well as hands-on experience with professionals in the marine science field.  I have been interested in marine science since high school when I took a trip to the Florida Keys and got to see all ocean for the first time.

What I’m doing on this cruise: I will be looking at the concentrations of specific chemicals in the oceans which have been banned from use in the states since the 1970s. These chemicals can be harmful to the environment and warrant monitoring.
